Ston, and its counterpart Mali Ston, sits on the cape of land connecting the Pelješac Peninsula to the mainland. Ston werd ooit gesticht als een Illyrische nederzetting, maar werd het later een Romeinse kolonie. In de middeleeuwen werd Ston een belangrijk politiek en kerkelijk centrum. Dit kwam vooral doordat de Avaren, Ston niet wisten te bereiken. Later zou Ston geregeerd worden door verschillende koning- en keizerrijken, waaronder het Byzantijnse Rijk.
Het is een unieke ervaring om de nacht in Ston door te brengen. Er zijn niet heel veel verschillende accommodaties in het dorp te vinden, maar elk heeft zijn sfeer en comfortlevel. The Pelješac peninsula as a whole deserves a few more days of your time. Orebić, on the southwest coast, has a lovely seafront promenade is lined by gracious 19th-century villas and an interesting maritime museum (a fleet of 90 tall ships was once based here). Behind Orebić you will find the highest peak of the peninsula, Sveti Ilija, which makes for a nice hike thanks to the network of well-marked trails take you up to the top for stunning views of the Adriatic. Heading east of Orebić, you can easily spend a day flitting between the multiple Dingač vineyards that occupy the slopes around Potomje.
If you’re interested in trying some of the local oysters and mussels, some restaurants in Ston serve them fresh. If you’re looking for something more substantial, several restaurants serve traditional Croatian dishes.
Kapetanova Kuca (‘Captain’s House’) is in an excellent location by the harbour in Mali Ston. As ever, oyster dishes rule the day, but there are also excellent pasta choices, and you must also try one of their desserts.
